An update on Kathi Goertzen's condition by Dan Lewis, Oct. 30.

The next -- and we all hope -- final phase of treatment is under way for our colleague Kathi Goertzen. Her radiation therapy began today, and will continue for 3 weeks.

Her doctors hope that radiation, in combination with a drug Kathi will be taking, will get rid of this brain tumor once and for all -- a non-cancerous tumor that Kathi has been battling off and on for 10 years now.

I asked Kathi how frustrating this is for her:

"I get frustrated occasionally but I very rapidly figured out that doesn't help much and so I have my moments of frustration definitely and I can throw a big pity party but it doesn't really help anything. So I don't get too down I try to stay pretty upbeat about it and figured out that's the best way and the best energy to put forward to this whole thing.

Frustrated, yeah, I would like to speed up the clock and fast forward the whole healing process so I could get this all behind me but we all know that you have to listen to your body and you can only go so fast. There's only so much I can do and think positively so that's what I'm trying to do but if you could speed it up a little that would be great."

It'll probably be several weeks before Kathi returns to work, but she -- and all of us here at KOMO -- sure are looking forward to that day.
