Street racer sends sobering message to students

GRAHAM - A teenage street racer is lucky to be alive. He survived wrecking his car Tuesday night driving 110 miles per hour. Now, he has a message he is sending to other teen drivers.

First up for the message are students at Graham-Kapowsin High School. They received a rude awakening as they arrived at school Friday when Gavin Simcoe -- the driver of the car -- and Graham firefighters showed them the mangled wreckage of Gavin's car.

"Hey, check this out," Graham firefighter Ryan Woodey told students as they arrived. "This is the result of street racing, one of your buddies...

"He was street racing down off of 110th and 254th," he continued. "He's lucky to be alive, actually.... so you can see the results of street racing."

Firefighters realize the lure of street racing is strong among teenage boys. They're hoping this display brings them down to earth.

"Yes. I don't street race anyway," said student Palmer Molstad. "All I have is a Nissan truck and I'm not going to street race it."

Another student added, "They just street race where ever they go. This is the result. Don't street race, people, you hear that."

The question is: Will this really work with getting the message through to teenagers? The driver actually walked away and some of the students say that had this been a fatality it would have sent a stronger message.

"This isn't OK," Simcoe said. "This changed my life... I rolled it about 6-7 times and wrapped it around a pole." Amazingly, Gavin suffered only a slight injury to his hand.

Now, he's taking the message to his fellow students.

"Tell your friends this is what happened to a kid at our school and I'm lucky to be standing here telling you about this," he said.

Last Tuesday night, he was invincible at 110 miles an hour. "As soon as I saw those headlights, it totally changed my view of life," Simcoe said.

Today, Gavin is taking it slow. He wants the message to sink in. He wants to save lives.

His wrecked car will be displayed Saturday night at the Graham-Kapowsin football game, so parents can get the same message their teens got Friday morning.
