Police: Armed 15-year-old arrested while heading for school

SEATTLE -- Seattle police arrested a 15-year-old boy who they say was armed with a handgun and heading to his downtown Seattle school.

Officers were tipped off just after 12:30 p.m. on Thursday that a student at Seattle's Interagency Academy was heading to the school armed with a handgun.

Police immediately put the school on lockdown and began searching for the student. Officers learned the boy spends much of his time at several Ballard "hangouts" and began searching those locations.

They soon found him in the 1400 block of NW 85th Street. While searching the student, officers found an unloaded handgun. He was booked into the Youth Service Center for investigation of unlawful possession of a firearm.

The school lockdown ended at 2:45 p.m.

Police are still investigating the case, but say initial reports don't indicate the boy had threatened any classmates or the school in general.
