Cop in court on perjury charge

A Gig Harbor police sergeant charged with perjury and making false or misleading statements is in court this week.

Matthew Dougil's trial began Monday in Pierce County Superior Court in Tacoma.

The charges against the 11-year veteran of the department stem from an investigation into surrounding a drug case.

Investigators allege that Dougil lied on police reports that resulted in a pair of convictions. Thos convictions were later vacated and the city paid $45,000 in damages.

Court proceedings are expected to last about a week.
