An American soldier will avoid the death penalty for killing 16 Afghan civilians during nighttime raids on two villages last year, after a military judge accepted his guilty pleas in the case Wednesday.

A multijurisdictional drug dealing investigation in Lakewood ended violently Wednesday night when a suspect hit a Homeland Security officer with a car and the officer shot the man. The agent was treated and released from a local hospital while the suspect is in stable condition and under guard.
