Federal employee sentenced for viewing child porn at work

SEATTLE -- A former federal worker who admitted to looking at child pornography at work was sentenced Tuesday to five years in prison.

Thomas J. Barrett was arrested at his Social Security Administration office in January.

Prosecutors say the 50-year-old had accessed child pornography at work and at his Lynnwood home.

SSA officials first got wind of the crimes in November 2012, when they found evidence that Barrett was accessing inappropriate materials online.

They immediately began an investigation, which turned up more than 3,500 images of child porn on his home and work computers, according to prosecutors.

While searching his browsing history and hard drive, website analysts also learned that Barrett looked at online news stories about the penalties for possessing and distributing child pornography, according to prosecutors.

After serving his five year prison term, Barrett will be on 10 years of supervised release.
