Modern-day pirate suspected of plundering expensive bike

SEATTLE -- Officers suspect a modern-day pirate may be responsible for plundering a piece of $3,000, two-wheeled booty from a 70-foot vessel moored on Lake Union.

On July 12, a man who lives with his wife on a boat moored in the 2000 block of Westlake Avenue North noticed someone had stolen one of the three bicycles stored on board.

According to the Seattle Police Department's report for the incident, the victim said he keeps the bikes stored unlocked on his boat's swim step, and the most expensive one was missing.

While there may be surveillance footage of the thief if he or she came by land, the dock is fenced off and locked; it's more likely the thief came by water, according to the report.

Officers noted the thief probably pulled a boat up to the swim step, lifted the bike into the boat, and sailed off.

While police don't yet have a suspect, this crime reporter has identified a number of people of interest here, here and here.
