Woman shot in Renton gun battle dies; homicide probe launched
RENTON, Wash. - A young woman who was shot during a Wednesday night gun battle in Renton has died of her injuries, and the shooting is now classified as a homicide, police said.

The 20-year-old woman, who suffered a single gunshot wound to the abdomen, was pronounced dead at about 9:50 a.m. Thursday at Harborview Medical Center, where she was taken after the shooting, said Robert Onishi of the Renton police.

Officers responded to the scene of the shooting, at Liberty Park in Renton, at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday after reeceiving a number of 911 calls about shots fired.

Arriving at the scene, police found the 20-year-old woman lying on the east side of the park.

From witness accounts and city video monitoring, investigators learned that a fistfight had started between two women, each with a group of other people.

During the fistfight, at least one man from each of the groups pulled out a gun, and multiple shots were fired between the groups. Most of the people in both groups fled after the shoot-out, Onishi said.

A man was detained nearby and questioned by the police, then released pending further investigation.

The victim, who had recently moved back to the Seattle area, suffered a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. She was transported to Harborview and underwent surgery, but doctors could not save her. Onishi said she was not one of the two women who were fighting.

Renton police are working to identify and locate everyone who was present at the time of the shooting.

Anyone who witnessed the shooting or who has any information about the incident or the people involved is asked to call the Renton police at 425-430-7500. The case number is 13-5506.
