Union man's body found in Case Inlet

Coast Guard crews and Mason County deputies found the body of a missing boater early Thursday in Case Inlet.

Mason County sheriff's Chief Deputy Dean Byrd says deputies recovered the body about 7 a.m. Thursday after it was spotted by a Coast Guard helicopter.

The man's body was about three-fourths of a mile from where his boat was found running about 2:30 a.m. Thursday in Case Inlet. He was identified later as Michael K. Neher, age 67, of Union.

The Mason County Coroner said that an autopsy will be performed on the man's body Friday morning. The death is being investigated by the coroner and the Mason County Sheriff.

The man's wallet, keys and cell phone were on the boat. He had failed to return Wednesday evening to Jarrell's Cove Marina on Harstine Island.

Byrd says the man did not have a known medical condition. He had been repairing the boat.

Crews in boats and a Coast Guard helicopter were involved in the search.
