Shelton's skatepark faces possible closure

Who will step up and save Shelton's skatepark?

That's a question likely to be answered when the Mason County Commission holds a public hearing on Tuesday morning concerning the popular skateboarding facility next to Wal-Mart.

Facing closure last year, the park was saved when the Squaxin Island Tribe chipped in the $8,000 needed to operate the park.

Those funds aren't available this time around.

The commission planned on holding a hearing earlier this month to consider the parks closure, but postponed that meeting to give the county's parks department time to consider a new plan for funding the park.

The only facility of its kind in Mason County, the park is popular gathering spot for teens and is a venue for regional skateboarding competitions.
