Woman fatally struck by semi moments after crash near Shelton

NEAR SHELTON, Wash. -- A woman who had just crashed her car on U.S. 101 was killed moments later when she got out of her car and attempted to cross the busy highway Monday morning.

Trooper Russ Winger says the woman had been reported for driving erratically around 4 a.m. by a driver who was following her. Winger says a trooper was on the way when the woman spun out and struck a guardrail.

Winger says the man who followed her tried to get her to stay at the car, but she wandered onto the highway into the path of the truck. The driver couldn't stop. She was killed at the scene. The truck driver was not hurt.

Troopers identified the victim as 19-year-old Rebecca E. Martinson of Olympia.

The crash report from the State Patrol indicated that drugs and/or alcohol was a factor in the incident but no charges would be filed.

The road was closed for three hours for the police investigation.
