Inquest ordered into Bellevue SWAT team shooting in Seattle
SEATTLE - The King County executive has ordered an inquest into the fatal shooting of a man in Seattle by a Bellevue SWAT team.

Inquests are routinely called to examine the circumstance of any fatal shooting by police and establish facts. The prosecutor will decide whether the shooting was justified.

Bellevue police went to Seattle on March 22 looking for an armed robbery suspect. They encountered Russell L. Smith in a car.

Police say he was driving at officers when three officers shot and killed him.

The shooting angered many in the Columbia City neighborhood where it happened. They awoke to screams, gunfire and an explosion.

Bellevue police officials admit mistakes were made in the incident, but they defend the department's actions.
