Police: Robber hires unwitting cabbie as getaway driver

SEATTLE -- After robbing a 59-year-old woman at a Beacon Hill bus stop, a man used a hired taxi to escape capture, according to the Seattle Police Department.

According to police, the victim was waiting for a bus around noon Sunday at Beacon Avenue South and South Columbian Way when a man ran up behind her and grabbed the cellphone and wallet out of her hand.

The victim chased after the man while screaming for help, but he was able to get into a waiting cab and drive off, according to police.

A witness who saw the chase followed the cab for four blocks until the man got out and ran off again. Officers arrived and were unable to find him.

According to police, the cab driver told the witness he was innocent. He said the man had given him $5 to wait for him prior to the robbery.
