TACOMA, Wash. -- Life had other plans for a Tacoma couple in the middle of planning their wedding.
Heather Karl says it may be sappy, but in her home that's become a wedding shop, love is what gets her through the door.
The Tacoma couple got engaged about a year ago. They set a date for July 20, 2013 and with the wedding wheels in motion, life dealt the couple an unexpected blow.
"To be in the best shape of your life and told you have stage 4 cancer is a complete shock to me," Kris Shook says.
In April, Shook was diagnosed with two types of lymphnoma, but he vowed that wouldn't stop him from getting married.
"We weren't going to let anything disrupt the wedding, we're not going to let cancer dictate our lives," says Shook.
Shook started chemotherapy while he and Karl kept planning, but soon medical bills mounted and they had to make changes.
"It's 8 days away. My dress isn't done, the wine's not in the bottles, and the table decorations aren't done," Karl says.
To save money, Karl is making nearly everything from the wine to the cake. Karl says she's never even made a dress before.
"It pretty much turned into a do-it-yourself project," Karl says.
The couple says even if the wedding isn't picture perfect, if the decorations don't quite match, it doesn't matter because each of them has their perfect fit.
"There's a reason we met, and she's my best friend," Shook says to Karl.
Friends decided to help by setting up a fundraising website. They've raised about $2,000 so far.
