Yelm boy hit by falling engine hoist doing better today

Yesterday it looked bad for a 5-year-old hit by a falling 200-pound engine hoist, today his situation is dramatically improving.

"He's doing much better today," said Southeast Thurston Fire Authority Chief Rita Hutcherson. "No broken bones, no problems with his spine."

Hutcheson said the little boy was playing outside near the engine hoist in the driveway of his home on Kalmia Court SE yesterday.

"He decided to swing on it and dad didn't get to him quick enough before it tipped and fell on him," said Hutcherson.

The boy was airlifted to Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in Tacoma around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday.

"He will be going to surgery at some point, he's got a blood clot in his belly that they need to remove," said Hutcheson.

Initially Hutcheson had called the injuries life-threatening.

Law enforcement tell KOMO News there will be no criminal investigation.

"This is just a terrible unfortunate accident," said Hutcheson.
