Yelm man shot in neck early Friday morning

Police are investigating a shooting that left a man wounded early this morning in Yelm.

The shooting occurred in the 17300 block of 103rd Avenue Southeast about 2:15 a.m., said Thurston County sheriff's Lt. Chris Mealy.

A 23-year-old Yelm man was shot in the neck and the chest near his shoulder.

He is undergoing surgery at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, though Mealy said he is expected to survive.

No other injuries were reported.

Mealy said details are unclear, but it appears the shooting occurred in the front yard of a residence and the suspect was looking for the victim.

Investigators are trying to determine what sparked the gunfire, but Mealy said no the investigation has been difficult because the victim says he doesn't remember anything about the shooting.

As of noon, no arrests had been made.

"The victim himself was the only one who saw anything," Mealy said. "This not the result of an accident, there is foul play involved here."
