Recession-slammed restaurants slashing staff
OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - The Washington Restaurant Association says a spot check of its members finds that many are hurting from the recession.
The association surveyed 60 members in January and found that 58 percent of them had cut staff hours in the previous 12 months.
The survey also found that 82 percent expect to cut more jobs or have a reduced staff, and 63 percent say sales were down in January compared with a year earlier.
Association president Anthony Anton tells The Olympian newspaper that the state's restaurant industry has lost 10,000 jobs in the past year. He says he's worried that the next step for many restaurants will be to shut down.
