BELLEVUE, Wash. -- We can thank the economic downturn for a new wine bar in Bellevue.

After 19 years as a mortgage banker, Steve Walker literally turned to the bottle to get him through the hard times: "As everybody knows who has watched the news or has read the papers, it was a good time to get out of that business."

So, on May 1, Steve and two of his buddies opened Grand Cru Wine Shop & Bar: "Grand Cru is a term that is the very best cuvees, the very best wines associated with Bordeauxs and Burgundys."

Grand Cru offers the whole wine lifestyle experience to those who are new to wine - as well as seasoned collectors. "During the week, it's mostly a very comforting place to end your day. On Friday nights, which is our 'Thank God It's Champagne' Fridays, we play 80s music all night long and serve 16 different bubblies by the glass."

There's also a sizeable collection of small plates. "Pates, crostini, different cheese plates. One of our most popular happy hour items is the pork sliders. You get two sizeable pork sliders with chips for five-dollars. So, it's a great way to fill up and be able to taste a lot of great wine, really."

YouNews Almost Old Enough!! Almost Old Enough!!
About a week ago I posted 3 pictures of 4 newly hatched Dark-Eyed Oregon Junco chicks. These are the same little ones, 8 days old now. They should fledge by June 1. It's amazing how quickly they grow. A week ago there was tons of room in the nest.

Each year since 1946, the Nisei Veterans Committee has held a Memorial Day Service to honor all who have died in service of their country, especially members of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, the most highly decorated unit for size and length of service in the history of the US Military, and the Military Intelligence Service, a group credited by General MacArthur's staff with shortening the War in the Pacific by two years
