Save money on home repairs: Think winter in summer
By Herb Weisbaum
Want to save money on summertime home repairs? Then you need to go against the flow. Do the projects most people don't think about when it's warm outside.
This is the peak time for work related to air conditioners -- the perfect time to have a furnace tune up and your chimney cleaned. "Most people aren't thinking about that and so the chimney cleaners can get there relatively quickly," says Matt Maury, president of the Home Owners Club (www.homeownersclub.org). "In the winter, their backlog is often a month or two when people start thinking about it in October." When it comes to furnace tune-ups, many heating companies run summer specials to keep their crews busy. Maury says if your roof is about ready to replace, you might want to do it now. Skyrocketing petroleum prices, he says, are driving up the cost of roofing. "It's probably less expensive now then it will be this winter," he says. Summer is also good time to deal with leaky gutters. Chances are you'll pay less because gutters are easier to fix when they are not filled with water. More Information: 10 DIY Summer Home Repairs. |
