Kirkland brothers' Obama song was just the start
By Brian Calvert
Something grassroots must grow from a seed.
Or in this case, two. Jon Bergevin is a software engineer. Joe Bergevin is a homebuilder. In their free time, the brothers write and produce music. Joe took his family to an Obama appearance late last year. "My daughter, Chloe, about 18 months old at the time, runs underneath the rope line and right out in front of him (Obama)," Joe said. "And he goes 'It's okay honey, come on up here' and I'm looking for Secret Service to come running in from either direction." After that meeting, Joe says he was inspired to write a song. He called his brother Jon, who then called some of his friends in the music business. One of them is drummer Matt Cameron from Pearl Jam. Both brothers agreed that this new song had to have a gospel sound, so the next call went to Pat Wright, director of the Total Experience Gospel Choir. "Oh no, not another project!" Wright recalls thinking at the time But she made an exception, and the song was now the group's top priority. "This is the most historical moment I'll ever see in my life," she said. The song and video for "Fired up and Ready to go" hit YouTube, and the entire country saw it. The Bergevin brothers received a call from Obama's campaign, which wanted to show the video at the candidate's Seattle appearance at Key Arena. If you were there, you remember the song. And this is just the beginning for the two brothers from Kirkland. "Fired Up, Ready To Go" was a sensation, and led to more inspiration for Jon and Joe Bergevin. They decided to write and record an entire album called "Seven songs for America." It came together in weeks, and hundreds of copies were handed out. Some were distributed earlier this year at the Democratic National Convention, and one copy landed in the hands of someone well connected in Hollywood. An official with Universal Studios called Jon , and asked him and his brother to write another song -- this one for a new movie they plan on releasing later this winter. That brings us to exactly one week ago: Election night 2008. While we were waiting for vote counts, the group was reassembled and back in the studio to record the new song "I am an American." "In the middle of this recording session, we had a big TV on in the other room, and they said that he (Obama) had been declared the winner," Pat Wright recalls. "Well, everybody went 'bonkers!'" The song has been shipped to the movie producers, and is set to be featured in the upcoming universal release "Barack Obama: The man and his Journey." So, what's next for Kirkland's Bergevin Boys? Jon Bergevin isn't shy at all about "I am an American." "It's actually perfectly constructed for the Inauguration," he says with a big grin. They're currently working on an invitation. --- On the net: http://bergevinbrothersmusic.com/default.aspx |
