Why rush into rush-hour traffic when you have an offer like this?

SEATTLE -- Some of Seattle's best musicians are practicing. There are singers, saxophone players, pianists. They’re all getting ready to offer you a slightly different take on “Happy Hour.”

“The whole idea is for people in the downtown area, instead of rushing into traffic, to stop by,” says organizer Anita Proudfoot. “Hear some music, and then head on to where they’re going to be going.”

Welcome to Happy Hour....at Gethsemane Lutheran Church.

“It’s a new series that we’re trying to start-up,” Proudfoot announces.

But you know what we all associate with “Happy hour,” don’t you? You don’t do that at church, do you?

“Well, we will,” she says with a laugh. “…because, we’re Lutheran.”

For those of you who didn't think Lutherans knew who to party, they do plan on serving wine -- in moderation -- of course. There will be snacks, and a lot of great live music.

How does the Happy Hour Concert series jive with church members?

“This mission of this church is to be a presence in the downtown (Seattle) community,” Proudfoot tells KOMO News. “…which is kind of a rare thing, especially now since churches keep moving out.”

The first "Happy Hour Concert" will be this coming Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the church, which is at 9th and Stewart, just across the street from the Greyhound bus depot. It's not every day you're invited to a free happy hour with music, food and beverages, and Anita says, that was the point.

“We’ve been wanting to invite the community into the church,” she says. “We thought ‘Let’s try it!’ ”
