Cops asked to leave Denny's restaurant for carrying guns
A group of Illinois police officers trying to order restaurant food got an order to leave unless they got rid of their weapons. Talia Kaplan has the story.

What kind of retards does Denny's hire as management?! It sounds like someone with an ax to grind who was abusing his/her authority. Â That person had better be a superb driver when passing through that town from now on.
Â
Since I carry a weapon for a living on and off-duty, neither I nor my family will ever frequent Denny's again.Â
So denny's relases a statement saying they do allow police to carry guns in their restaurants. i don't know of any public place where an officer can't carry their weapon. idiots!!!Â
@LMcK4Him Denny's is a privately owned business open to the public and most certainly can have such a policy if they choose to. A publically owned property like a city park or a city library would be different.
What a complete moron! Why is it that liberals paint ALL gun users, even cops, with the same brush as an insane murderer? I'd say this Denny's manager is a bit mentally challenged himself. The first people who would come to help if an insane shooter walked into his restaurant would be those armed police, guns drawn. The only difference would be there would already be several dead people lying around, most likely including him.
Whom ever gave that order must be trying out for the Bozo award of the year. Those officers must remain armed at all times when on duty. Denney's has no right to ask or refuse service to those who are trying to protect their dumb ass. Next time they get robbed the cops should tell them they can't respond because they are armed (ha ha ha).
Well, At least now the criminals will know what restaurant to hit. One more Gun Free Zone target for them.
Well Chippy...Now you know what WE go through when we OC or if we are made on a CC. Its BS roundly, but its good that it happened to the cops for a change. Lets them see it through our eyes .
Â
I think that a "No Guns, No Money" card needs left with the manager. Who SHOULD be a FORMER manager.
@Woodswalker see through our eyes how? have you been asked to leave denny's for carrying a gun?
@LMcK4Him  @Woodswalker Not Denny's, but another similar establishment, I was made by another customer while CC after my kid knocked over a cup of hot coffee onto me and i was scrambling to get the hot coffee soaked shirt off my skin. We hadn't eaten yet and the manager not only asked us to leave but to pay for the food we had ordered but not had served.  I told the manager that 1) I was legally carrying, 2) wasn't going to pay for food i didn't get to eat and 3) that i resented him making a VERY public stink.  He INSISTED that i pay for the food AND leave the store, I told him he couldn't have both.
Â
He then summoned the police, who arrived rather quickly, checked my permit and explained to me that I DID have to leave if asked...to which i responded that i knew that was was willing to comply peacefully with that...but was NOT going to pay for food i didn't get and didn't appreciate the hyperbole that the manager was spewing, "that i was going to shoot the place up if I didn't get my way" and that "guns were a menace to society"....all in a very loud, hysterical voice.
Â
The police officers agreed with me on all 3 points, I left, with out paying for food that came out but i was not allowed to sit and eat and they advised the manager that i was legally carrying and likely not a threat as i had a long term CWP (as it was then) and no criminal record.
Â
I've never entered that chain since, wont spend a dime with them.  A letter to their corporate offices yielded a slimy, weaselly response in a similar tone.  NOWHERE was the establishment posted no firearms.
If the officers need a weapon for protection while on break out in public why does the public not need it?  You'd think that with all those tough gun laws that the politicians keep talking about working so well in Illinois and want to expand to the rest of the country that the officers would not need guns anymore.
I have to laugh a bit how when the situation is turned on them they don't like it. Â I've been in restaurants and stores where someone has complained about my pistol possession and called the cops. Â Even after the officer finds out I am perfectly legal they will go to management and tell them they have the option to still kick me out.
Really? They aren't average citizens. Like the Captain said, they were asked to leave for carrying the tools of their trade. When someone is confronted with danger, they ask these individuals to step inbetween them and the threat. They literally put their lives in front of ours to protect and you're saying they should be treated just like the rest of us? Just because you carry doesn't mean that you are asked to respond to dangerous situations like police officers are. They are targeted JUST for being officers, even if they don't do anything because of people like you who don't have enough respect to recognize the danger they put themselves in the second they put their badge on. Have you forgotten about the 4 Lakewood officers who were killed just for wearing a uniform? How many civilians were killed in that coffee shop? None.  Out of the THOUSANDS of police officers in our area, pull up the number of stories and formal complaints of corrupt officers. You'll find it to be a miniscule amount compared to the number of employed officers. With your type of attitude, why would they want to come to your rescue when you are in need? When your family is in danger, should they just act like an average citizen and call someone else to help?Â
@refinneJ I am not sure who you are responding too but if it is me I think you completely missed my point.  I completely support the officers in this case, this manager and whoever complained is a complete moron.  My issue is that a lot of police officers have the same attitude toward open carry citizens legally going about their business and will often do their best to convince an owner or manager to do exactly what happened to them.  If I was there and witnessed that I would have walked out right along with them.  Again I think you misidentified my type of attitude here, maybe you just aren't that familiar with the type of grief a lot of open carriers deal with from cops and other people scared by the sight of a holstered pistol that do not know the law.
@refinneJ Combat situations are a very small part of a police officer's job.  And the police aren't as great shots as many of us imagine they are.  You would be surprised that the "average person" might be as good, or better, than a police officer depending how much trigger time he/she has.
Really? Because I know multiple officers who are confronted with it, or at least potentially dangerous criminals daily? All of the ones I know also spend time in the range improving their shot as a regular part of their job. One serves warrants on a daily basis, others are on patrol where there is always the potential. I didn't mean that they are placed in combat situations daily...I was saying they are always faced with the potential. Too many people don't recognize what they do, how they train, and the threats they face on a daily basis simply for doing their job and holding their title as a police officer.Â
@refinneJ When I'm in danger I'll take care of it and they will show up in time to do the paperwork. I don't rely on the police for my protection, because I realistically can't, especially where I live. 15-30 min response time. I have respect for those that put on the uniform and take their oath to uphold the Constitution seriously. The ones that see the armed public as allies and not potential criminals in waiting. Those ones, sadly, don't seem to stick around that long. The rest cultivate and promote this "us vs them" attitude....especially in a place like Illinois.
@oledawg Dealt with the same while open carrying. What's good for the goose is good for the gander....nice to see cops being treated as equals instead of being treated like extra-human individuals. Tired of the privilege.
@dg54321 I especially love how the Captain calls it harassment and embarrassing, yes sir it sure is, replace the word officer with citizen and you got the same situation.
@oledawg As I will tell any private business. Yes they have to right to ask me to leave if I am carrying a firearm, and I have the right to take my business elsewhere and list them as against lawful carry in the firearm community.Â
