Raw video: 550-lb. WWII bomb detonated

Explosives experts in Germany have detonated the remains of a 550-pound World War II bomb in central Munich.
The dapd news agency cited a police spokesman as saying the bomb was successfully destroyed Tuesday evening. Still, burning debris caused fires in several nearby buildings that had been evacuated after the bomb was discovered Monday in the Schwabing district.
Efforts to defuse the bomb failed and experts decided to pack it with explosives and detonate it rather than risk an uncontrolled explosion.
Allied airplanes dropped millions of tons of ordnance on Germany during World War II in an effort to cripple the Nazi war machine. Tens of thousands of unexploded bombs are believed still to be lying in the ground in Germany.

This makes our news but children killed by "left over" land mines doesn't?  Something seriously wrong there.

When I was stationed in Germany in the early 90s, some construction workers were digging next to our hanger (which was used by the Luftwaffe in WW2). Suddenly you could hear the teeth on the backhoe bucket rake across something metallic. A worker with a shovel jumped into the hole and moved some dirt off the object. Suddenly the guy threw the shovel out of the hole and I don't remember him touching the sides as he flew out. The backhoe operator shut off the machine and ran off. The whole time I'm looking down on all of this. It turns out they had hit a 500lb bomb from WW2. The area was evacuated and the bomb was placed on a truck. The truck was taken out to the middle of a field, the bomb unloaded, then EOD blew up the bomb. The whole event was pretty exciting to say the least.
Oops.
