That fish will most likely die now, from removal of protective slime, jaw/gill injury, and crushing forces against internal organs that are used to being supported by surrounding water. That is why Washington and other states now have laws stating that a steelhead/salmon that is not going to be retained cannot be removed from the water prior to release. Â Â
