I don’t know that any of us at KOMO can even begin to express how much you have meant to us in the last several days. Kathi’s death struck us to our core. Our hearts have been breaking.
Brave, strong and courageous. Kathi Goertzen was all that and more in her fight against brain tumors.
Today a piece of the fabric of my life is gone. Even though I’m putting this in words they can in no way come close to expressing the depth of the loss of one of my best friends, Kathi Goertzen.
It was the summer of 1987 and little did I know when I came to KOMO Television that I would be meeting one of the most important people in my life - a woman I would admire on the news set and off. A true professional and a role model for me - everyone else in the newsroom - and the entire Western Washington community.
If you didn't know better, you'd say she was the luckiest person you ever met. She was born into a wonderful family. She was so pretty, so talented, so proud to be a mother to Alexa and Andrea, so in love with her husband Rick.
Our co-worker, our angel, our precious friend, Kathi Goertzen, died today, surrounded by her loving family. The long fight against the tumors that have ravaged her brain is over. She is at peace now, comfortable and surrounded by all that is good.
It is often said you can judge a person's character by how they treat children and younger adults. By that measure, Kathi Goertzen was the best of them.
WSU Professor Glenn Johnson remembered Kathi's positive outlook on life and said she was a fighter right to the end.
This is a beautiful, touching tribute. Thank you for sharing it with us.
In listening to the tributes to Kathi it is truly heart rendering. However, as she said her spirit will always be here and I think her family more than anyone feels that spirit. What a beautiful lady we were blessed to have in our lives. Now, we will continue to have her spirit.   Now she feels no pain and that is wonderful. You go Kathi! Velma Schafer
I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER KATHYS SMILE AND HOW GREAT SHE WAS AND THE BEST SHE LOOK LIKE DRESS KATHY I EVER SAW I MISS YOU KATHYÂ Â Â Â Â LOVE JENNIFER J STERNBERG
Thank you Kathi for sharing your life with all of us!!!! We are better for it!!!! You inspired us with your dedidication, commitment, strength, courage, and your love everyday as you battled the raging brain tumors that finally took you from us!!! May you rest in peace with your Lord and Saviour. You have won the war and received your Eternal reward!!!!!! You are home now!!!! I can only imagine what Heaven is like!!!!! You will be missed but we rejoice in your Celebration and Home Going!!!!
It was hard to get through that. And then that shot of her chair, sitting there empty at the end. I lost it. We will go on, but we will never be the same. Thank you, Kathi, for everything you gave us, both on the air and off. We love you and we miss you.
One of the few in public life that lived a life worth emulating. If only the others in TV news could learn that from her! Deliver the news without bias, be yourself, be considerate of others, be a true friend, and live a life with good values. She did all that AND was successful. What better tribute would any of us want then at the end of our lives to hear people say that we were a good parent, spouse, friend, and co-worker. So I am going to laugh more, watch more sunsets and sunrises and live my values. Thanks Kathi for giving me an example to go by. My prayer is that your family and friends will find comfort during this time of grieving the lost of your presence.  Â
Wonderful tribute to Kathi Goertzen! My prayers and thoughts go out to her immediate family and her KOMO family. Watching the tribute brought back wonderful memories that we the viewers watched and enjoyed throughout the years. May God bless you all and keep you all strong as you go through these few days.
Since Kathi first appeared on KOMO - our family took in every word and appreciated, then loved to watch her with Dan. Precious memories of her announcing upcoming births - then introductions to her fans of her beautiful babies...and sharing such happiness. Steve, Dan, Kathy and all your families have dealt with much sadness and prayers for Kathi as a result, yet seem to be able to delve into your career on an even keel = which is most likely in her memory as she would want you to do and continue to enjoy the love of the work she shared. God bless her family as obviously their loss is nearly overwhelmingly too great and their public face is never waving from her wish that they continue to achieve and do well in this Life we're all blessed with. All I can offer as we viewers share this sadness, yet tribute to Kathi is to remind all that This Life is a Test - It is Only A Test. Eternity is limitless and Kathi's passing is one event that none of us can escape. Our passing back to the Arms of God is inevitable if we can manage to accomplish all that is good and right as best as we can handle with the cards of Life that we're dealt. Some of us can only play them as they are and hope becomes the best outlook as we thank God for what we do have. Always the best to you and your families for your thoughtful tenacity.
What a wonderful tribute to Kathi! Thank you Steve, Dan, Eric, Mary, & all @ KOMO, for sharing your thoughts, love, & sadness with us - your extended KOMO family. It wasn't easy for you to be so open when you have lost your great friend & are grieving as well. Thank you for your dedication & caring. Know that we will continue to keep each of you, & Kathi, in our hearts.
I`ve lived here in western Washington all my 45 years and Kathi and KOMO has been there, entering our home and bringing the news. Hearing she lost her courageous battle with brain cancer I was shocked and saddened. Watching your beautiful tributes to her I can feel the love that you had for her. Such good friends and colleagues at KOMO. Try and stay strong through this very difficult time. Kathi was a very special lady and will be missed by so many.
Beautiful tribute! I want to thank the KOMO team so much for going in front of the camera in the midst of your pain to give your viewers a place to grieve, as well. As Dan said, it would be so much easier for you to just go and hide your selves away at this time, but you didn't. Please know that you are in the thoughts and prayers of a community that loves you and wishes you all the best. We loved Kathi and we love you, too.
What a beautiful Tribute to your Beautiful Friend...time will heal but Kathie will remain in your hearts forever.
Â
Wonderful tribute to a Woman who was the Northwest! God bless you Kathi!
She truly was the "wind beneath our wings"....she took us to great heights with the news and utter despair. She had heart, and we will miss her. Her courage was of epic proportions, What a great role model. Rest in peace, Kathi.
The song her daughter sang so beautifully is still ringing in my ears. So many of us are wishing there was a CD/DVD of it & the profits could go to Kathi's foundation that she put her heart and soul into. Continued prayers for Rick, Alexa, Andrea and all who hold her close in their hearts.
God Bless you all. Kathi will never be forgotten. Her spirit lives in everyone she met and touched. Prayers to all who are affected by this great loss.Â
Â
What a graceful, heartfelt tribute. Thank you. A Kathi moment I'll always remember came one evenng when she was doing a newscast she didn't usually do, while someone was on vacation. Reading from the TelePrompTer, she said "I'm Kerry Brock..." she paused with a wonderful incredulous grin and said, "No I'm not, I'm Kathi Goertzen, in for Kerry Brock" and I think she may have rolled her eyes a little bit. What a wonderful, kind soul she was and what a lot of comfort she brought to the lives of so many people.
Many people in other Cities watch the news and see the news cast and don't think much. Seattle is a "small town" for a big city and the news cast has become part of our daily life. Kathi, as well as all of the Komo news cast have a place in the people of Seattle's hearts. Kathi was a remarkable woman who became a regular part of peoples lives. Whether we knew her personally or not, we all fought the battle with her. I remember the first time she announced she had tumors year ago, it was a blow. We all worried. When she came back and we saw her smiling face on the TV again, it was a relief. When she was sick and had to leave the news again, we felt a void as we watched the news from our living rooms knowing she was not going to be there. And over the years as we watched her struggle to win the battle, our hearts and prayers went out to her and her family. Now in the end, we grieve the loss of a wonderful woman, but celebrate her life and all that she has given to our community.
Â
I give you all at KOMO kudos for being able to face Seattle and give us this news of her death the day it happened, when we can clearly see the pain you are feeling. Yet you keep your composure and professionalism without missing a beat. You are ALL very special and dear to us all. Thank you all for what you do and for sharing Kathi with us for so many years.
What a wonderful woman. I feel so much for her family and friends. Her coworkers were SO strong to present this tribute and I commend them. There will never be another Kathi.
Thank you ! This is the most beautiful memorial I've ever seen. It reflects so much of her, she has been defined so beautifully by her message. This memorial is very healing, nurturing, beautiful,....She was so courageous to share her story, and her life. Her spirit lives, with it comes so many blessings. God Bless her family and co-workers. I pray that you will or have found peace in her entrance to heaven.
God bless you Dan, Steve, Eric, Mary, Molly and Connie. I hope you all know that we the viewers are crying with you and our heavy hearts are shared with yours. May God heal you all in time.
What is amazing with Kathi through all this...she is more concerned about how this effects others rather than worring about herself. I knew she was a very special person after watching her on KOMO News 4 for 30 years ...but I had no idea how amazing she really was. As I have stated before...Seattle has lost a living angel. My heart goes out to her family and friends during this great loss.
Dan, Eric, Steve, and Mary are an amazing class act. Thanks for all you have done for Kathi. God Bless you all during this sad time in your lives.Â
Dan and Eric, I know how hard it was for you two to sit there and talk about this amazing beautiful woman. It was heart breaking to see what those tumors did to her...but I was amazed by her strength to face this. This was a great tribute and I share your sadness I can't see the keys right now. Thanks for what you have done for her and for all you continue to do for all of us that tune into KOMO 4. I hope you find the strength to get through this. God Bless you all.
This is such a moving tribute to a wonderful part of the Seattle Community, Kathi Goertzen. She was a excellent news anchor and a great asset to the foundations she served. Having watched her over the years, you felt she was part of your own family. My heart and prayers to her family during this extremely difficult time, just know, we the public loved her and she will be missed.
This AMAZING woman gives me the courage to fight my battle with cancer. Thank you, Kathi.
I never met Kathi, but after watching her on the news for 35 years, felt I had. She was so BUBBLY and I feel a personal loss now. I know she'd not want that. This is a lovely tribute and her memory will go on for a very long time around here! I have a friend who is suffering from a similar condition and everytime I saw Kathi on KOMO, I thought of her, and when I visit myfriend in the nursing home, I think of Kathi and her bravery!

What a beautiful tribute. Thank you all for allowing us to share this sad time with you. And for giving us your personal insight. Kathi Goertzen was a lovely person and I thank everyone at KOMO for showing that to us through these videos. I am from Vancouver, Canada, and over the years have watched the local newscasts from Seattle. Thanks again for the loving memorial. Thanks, Kathi, for your eloquence and kind heart.
What an amazing tribute to Kathi Goertzen!  My Prayers are with all of you at KOMO and with her family.  She was a part of our family every night.  Dan and Kathi were just an incredible team.  Over the past twp years I've had 19 surgeries and spent 170 day in the hospital.  Watching Kathi with her faith and strength really encouraged me over these past two years.  She gave me that will to want to get well and to know that nothing can control us  but we can control how we handle it.  Thank you so much for sharing your  hearts and your grief with us.  God Bless All of you in these dark days of grief. Thank you for sharing this. I grew up in Mount Vernon and watched Kathi from the day she took over the news desk. Moving to Portland I missed Kathi and the trust I had instilled in her. A beautiful tribute to a beautiful soul.

Kathi Goertzen was a mentor and a role model for so many women! She was a woman of ethics, morals and high standards in the journalism field. She lived her life the same way. Strong, steady and always leading the way. She will be greatly missed by all. My heart and prayers go out to her family, friends, colleagues and our community.Â
I had moved away from Olympia, Washington seven years ago after living there for twenty years. She was a wonderful person, a great wife, mother, sister, daughter and of course a fighter. Kathi was loved by many, and will be missed by so many more people than anyone can ever count. She was a constant in my home growing up. That at 5:00 and 6:30, Kathi and Dan would be on the televisions in our home, so my parents could be informed of the days news. I thank you #Kathi and #Dan. I'm willing to bet she is up there in Heaven with Ray Ramsey, Eric Slocum and Jim Harriott doing the news. And i know my parents are watching.
What a beautiful woman inside and out! her spirit so kind and warm... she will be missed.
I will always remember where I was when I heard the news about Princess Diana, it struck me with great sadness and now I will always remember where I was when I heard the news about the loss of Kathi Goertzen, It will be forever etched in my memory. what deep sadness I feel and great joy for being so lucky to have her in my livingroom every night.....God bless you Kathi.                      Brenda Boe
Thank you for sharing your memories of Kathi your friend & co-Anchor. You guys show so much love and emotions. You guys are a family. You guys are awesome!
Her strength, her kindness, and her beauty within came out in all she did. She became a friend in our home when we moved here 15 years ago as we tuned to KOMO each night. She was the nicest person I have never met. My heart goes out to her family and her friends and co-workers. She will be missed but her legacy of living life to the fullest and showing compassion to others despite very difficult challenges is something I will take with me through my life.
WOW...I remember her so much growing up...what an amazing person and what a profound effect she has had on everyone's life. For those who were lucky enough to have watched her on the news, she was definitely a huge part of our lives and will be sorely missed! :(
What an incredible inspiration to all of us! I can only hope to be as positive & humble in my life as she was in life and will continue to be hereafter! Also, a special thank you to the KOMO team for letting us in to witness the raw emotions you are experiencing and for sharing this wonderful tribute! We have all truely lost a friend!
I moved to Central Washington 5 years ago and I missed seeing the Komo news team everyday. Kathi was always so upbeat and caring. I will miss her. My prayers go out to her family and friends.
What a fantastic tribute to an amazing & courageous lady, who fought a valiant battle against a deadly disease that was more than she was able to battle. She gave it her best for 14 years and 9 surgeries and I have the utmost respect & admiration for her. My prayers to her family, colleagues, & many friends who are grieving right now.
Thanks for a great tribute! May a peace that surpasses all understanding overwhelm each and everyone of you - especially her family!
Great Tribute!
Even though I have not lived in Washington for 7 years, I was born and raised there and II remember Kathi with great warmth. I remember when she first started on KOMO TV and I watched her everyday. I feel like I have lost a member of my family. My thoughts and prayers are with Kathi's family and her KOMO family. She will be as greatly missed as she was greatly loved. God be with you Kathi. Now on to the next chapter for your sweet wonderful soul.  Jeanne Abbott, Everett, WA and Surprise, AZ.
It is so sad to hear this news. She was obviously a joy and a fighter.
I feel I grew up with her. Â She joined us at our dinner table from the living room tv set as I grew up.
Blessings, love, and prayers to her many family & friends.
Peace to all of you. Kathi will be missed by all of us
I am sad to hear the news, I remember my mom telling me stories of how she live across the street and used to baby sit her. I did get the chance to meet her a few times through my mom, I hope her family is holding their heads up high about the mother, wife also the daughter she was. I know Kathi is looking over them and the Seattle area, but if we all know how she is she's reporting the news as we speak up there and signing off with her smile and her wave good night. May you RIP Kathi....
