Stay dry. Attend an upcoming library event

While we all anxiously wait for spring sunshine, stay dry by visiting one of the Seattle Public Library’s upcoming events.

March 20: The Seattle Public Library hosts readings of works by Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo
Join us for bilingual readings of the works of Chinese author and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at The Seattle Public Library, Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., Level 4, Washington Mutual Foundation Meeting Room 1.
The program is free and open to the public. Registration is not required. Parking is available in the Central Library garage for $5 after 5 p.m. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.
When Liu Xiaobo was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, he was represented by an empty chair at the ceremony in Oslo. Liu Xiaobo has been in detention in his home country of China for more than three years following his involvement in creating and publishing the human rights manifesto "Charter 08."
This event is part of an international effort organized by the Berlin International Literature Festival. Cultural institutions, schools and other organizations will participate in a worldwide reading of prose and poems by Liu Xiaobo on March 20, 2012.
Liu Xiaobo is a renowned literary critic, writer and political activist. Two of his of his recent books have been translated into English: "No Enemies, No Hatred: Selected Essays and Poems" and "June Fourth Elegies."

March 22: Author Joshua McNichols discusses 'The Urban Farm Handbook'
Local author Joshua McNichols will talk about his book, "The Urban Farm Handbook: City-Slicker Resources for Growing, Raising, Sourcing, Trading, and Preparing What You Eat," from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at The Seattle Public Library, Ballard Branch, 5614 22nd Ave. N.W.
The program is free and open to the public. Registration is not required. Free parking is available at the branch.
"The Urban Farm Handbook: City-Slicker Resources for Growing, Raising, Sourcing, Trading, and Preparing What You Eat" shares information on how to manage a busy, urban family life with homegrown foods, shared community efforts, and easy yet healthful practices.
McNichols has reported for KUOW 94.9 FM and for nationally syndicated public radio programs, including "Weekend America" and "The Splendid Table." He currently produces a podcast on composting for Seattle Tilth. He lives in Ballard.

March 24: The Seattle Public Library hosts workshop for book collectors
The Seattle Public Library will host a workshop for book collectors from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Green Lake Branch, 7364 E. Green Lake Dr. N. The workshop is free and open to the public. Registration is not required. Free parking is available at the branch.
The Book Club of Washington and the Library's Special Collections department are offering this free workshop for book collectors to learn more about the management of their collections. Expert collectors, dealers, librarians and conservators will address questions about book condition, value, recordkeeping, selling and donating.  For more information, call the Library at 206-386-4636.

March 28: Author Douglas Adkins discusses 'Dorade: The History of an Ocean Racing Yacht'
Author Douglas Adkins will share images and discuss his book "Dorade: The History of an Ocean Racing Yacht" from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at The Seattle Public Library, Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., Level 1, Microsoft Auditorium. "Dorade: The History of an Ocean Racing Yacht" explores the history of the most famous racing yacht in the world. Adkins, a Seattle native, sailor and student of yachting history, has followed "Dorade" for decades, sailed aboard her, and chronicled the many stages of her life, including many prominent decades racing in the Pacific Northwest.

March 31: The Seattle Public Library hosts special story time in memory of children's librarian Zane Goldmanis
The Seattle Public Library will host a special story time to celebrate the life of children's librarian Zane Goldmanis from 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Saturday, March 31 at the Magnolia Branch, 2801 34th Ave. W.
The story time is free and designed for all ages. Free parking is available at the branch.
Goldmanis was a librarian with The Seattle Public Library for nearly 40 years. Following the story time, a table etched with pictures in the children's area will be dedicated to Goldmanis. For more information, call the Magnolia Branch at 206-386-4225.
