1 killed, 3 hurt in suspected DUI crash in Federal Way

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - A woman suspected of driving under the influence with her 4-year-old son in the car triggered a three-car crash that killed one person and injured three others Thursday night in Federal Way, police said.
The woman who caused the crash also was driving without her headlights on when she crossed into oncoming traffic on busy Pacific Highway South, said Cathy Schrock of the Federal Way police.
Officers and medics responded to the scene, in the 37000 block of Pacific Highway South, at about 11:20 p.m. Thursday after receiving a report of a multiple-car collision.
A 48-year-old woman was found dead at the crash scene, and three others were injured - including the driver who triggered the crash and her 4-year-old son. All three of the injured were taken to the hospital.
An investigation found that the 32-year-old woman who caused the deadly collision was driving a Honda S2000 north on Pacific Highway South without her headlights on, Schrock said.
Her car crossed the center line and slammed head-on into a southbound Honda Civic, causing it to go airborne. The Honda Civic landed sideways and was struck in the driver’s door by a Honda Accord that was also southbound.
The driver of the S2000 is suspected to have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs, Schrock said. She has no prior DUI convictions but was driving with a suspended license, apparently due to unpaid parking tickets, police said.
The woman and her 4-year-old son were taken to Harborview Medical Center for treatment. She is considered to be under arrest and faces possible charges of vehicular homicide.
The other injured victim, an adult male whose age was not available, was taken to St. Francis Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Pacific Highway South was closed for about seven hours during the crash investigation.
