Van full of kids crashes after being sideswiped
OSO, Wash. -- A young boy was seriously injured Friday morning when the minivan he was riding in crashed into a pole after being struck by an oncoming car on Highway 530.

Trooper Kirk Rudeen said a woman driving west lost control on a soft shoulder on Highway 530 near Whitman Road and crossed into the oncoming lane. She managed to miss hitting a truck and another car before sideswiping the van.

"(I) made the corner, but was heading straight into a truck and whirled around him," said Luana Reece, the driver of the swerving car. "I went into the oppsite direction again, almost hit another car and pulled it back out. And third time was a charm. I hit a van."

The impact sent the minivan crashing into a power pole. An 8-year-old boy who was riding in the van was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Another child was taken to an area hospital, where he was treated and released.

"It's a very tragic accident," Rudeen said. "These are all fairly young kids."

The woman driving the minivan and the four other kids who were in the van were not seriously injured.

Reece and her passenger both suffered minor injuries.

The Washington State Patrol is still investigating the cause of the crash, though troopers believe speed was not a factor in the crash.

The crash in rural Snohomish County forced troopers to close Highway 530 near milepost 35 while they collected evidence and investigated the crash.

The 8-year-old boy suffered non-threatening injuries and remains in serious condition.
