SEATTLE -- Police say a young woman was fatally stabbed on a sidewalk Monday evening on Capitol Hill and the search for the killer continues.

Police spokesman Mark Jamieson said they 911 operators received numerous phone calls about 7 p.m. from residents in the 1600 block of East Howell who reported hearing a woman screaming.

When officers arrived, they found a 31-year-old woman on the sidewalk outside of a condo building who had been stabbed multiple times, but managed to twist away and get around the corner. Police say a man attacked her as she was just coming home from the store and was near the entrance to her building.

The woman was taken to Harborview Medical Center where she died from her injuries.

As police investigated the attack, the victim's tote bag from the Sierra Club was still sitting on the sidewalk.

That bag brought Lori Stutz to Capitol Hill Tuesday. She works at the Sierra Club with a woman who lives here.

"We also had plans (Monday) night. I couldn't get a hold of her last night," Stutz said. "I couldn't get ahold of her today. So we're just coming down to be sure it wasn't her. But we couldn't get ahold of her yet. So we're just hoping it's not her."

Strangers came to the scene as well to leave flowers and share their sorrow over a crime that appears to be random.

"You should be outraged by what happened," said Johan Lysne, who brought flowers to the scene. "You should be. Because it could've been my mother, your sister, somebody's brother, grandfather, and if we don't start looking out for each other no one will."

Seattle Police are beefing up patrols in the area, looking for more witnesses. They don't know if the victim knew her attacker.

Lori Stutz says she can't imagine anyone targeting her friend, a woman she describes as very nice and having no problems with anyone.

"I feel pretty shaky right now," she said. "I'm just hoping I'm wrong."

Police say the attacker was a white man in his 40s, who was about 6 feet tall with a 3-4 inch scruffy beard. He was described by witnesses as "transient, but not too dirty". He was wearing baggy pants, a yellow hoodie under a blue parka, and had a dark ski hat.

Police hope to release a sketch of the attacker on Wednesday. If you have any information about the crime, please contact Seattle police.

In the meantime, the victim's name has not been released.
