SEATTLE -- The city officials' plan to install additional security cameras at parks around the city in an effort to deter crime has critics shaking their heads.

Some residents believe the cameras will be an invasion of privacy, but city officials remain firm in their resolve.

"We've proposed and are moving forward with a pilot program to use cameras in some of the parks to add an extra layer of security and deterrents to folks that might have other than positive intentions in the parks," said Marty McComber with Mayor Greg Nickels' office.

But many are uncomfortable with the idea of being watched.

"I didn't know they were there, but I've heard there are surveillance cameras almost everywhere," said Ray Noble.

Two cameras already monitor parts of Pike Place Market, and the city just installed a record-only camera at Cal Anderson Park in the city's Capitol Hill neighborhood.

The city plans to install rotating cameras at Hing Hay Park, Occidental Park and Victor Steinbrueck Park.

"They don't work and they're intrusive," said Doug Klunder with the American Civil Liberties Union. "The camera isn't going to do anything, unless you have the officer there. And what the camera is going to do is take that much money away from added patrols."

The City Council approved $600,000 for those new cameras last fall. The cameras won't be installed until the Department of Parks and Recreation briefs the council on how they will be used.

Meantime, the debate as to whether the plan would be a waste of money or money well spent continues.

"I don't know, it seems like the thieves would find out where the cameras are and just avoid them," said Michelle Watte.

"I think in some places I think it's a good thing, as long as it doesn't get in your private space," Noble said.

Only time will tell.
