OLYMPIA - We knew our story of a 10-year-old girl becoming a veterinary assistant would be of interest to you, but we had no idea just how interesting. We introduced her to you on Tuesday, but now Courtney Oliver's story has now gone around the world.

Courtney looks like a 10-year-old and she acts like a 10-year-old, except for the microscope and X-rays of animals.

"Here, you see a pregnant dog," she said, pointing to an X-ray.

For as long as she can remember, Courtney has wanted to be a veterinarian. And she is on her way to attaining that goal.

She completed an online course to become a veterinary assistant. Now, she volunteers once a week at the South Bay Veterinary Hospital in Olympia.

Our first story on komotv.com introduced Courtney to thousands of people around the world. And it was the featured story on Yahoo.com.

She's become an overnight inspiration.

"Because I'm so young and I'm pursuing my dream," she said. "Most people usually do it when they're like 20 or something and I'm doing it when I'm 10. So they're pretty amazed that I can do this."

We've been getting e-mails from all over the country about Courtney. They read:

"My 11-year old is interested in the program -- another Doogie Howser in the making."

"I am a Girl Scout troop leader in Pflugerville, TX. They would love to contact her as they inspire to work with animals."

"Thank you for covering this inspiring story, it may make a difference in the future of other young vets-to-be."

"I was wondering if I could please reprint the article in our state association newsletter. I think it would be a really great story for our local veterinarians to know that young children are interested in veterinary medicine as a career."

Courtney has gained so much attention that she's even making an appearance on a nationally syndicated talk show. And she's in negotiations with Animal Planet to be part of their on-air team.

"Because people are just so inspired and this is just such a great opportunity to help people pursue their dreams," she said.

As far as pursuing her dream of becoming a full doctor of veterinary medicine, Courtney says she's not ready yet to go away for the 8 years of college it takes. She likes being home and being a normal 10-year-old.

Courtney's mother says her daughter tests at the high school level in most courses and that's why she qualified for the online course. They encourage prospective veterinarians to check out their local 4-H.
