PORT ANGELES, Wash. -- The man who shot his ex-girlfriend before shooting himself while the woman's two daughters hid upstairs had been convicted of stalking in the past.

Police said Jeffrey Calvert kicked in the door of his ex-girlfriend's house and shot her to death before taking his own life on Sunday.

Kristin Stock's two girls ran upstairs and called 911 to report that the 41-year-old man was in their house with a gun.

Officers heard two gun shots as they arrived at the house in near the intersection of West 13th Street and South Oak Street, and found Jeffrey Calvert and Kristin Stock dead.

The two girls, age 9 and 11, were found hiding in a closet and were not hurt.

"Even those of us that have been around for as long as I have, or even longer, this thing is horrific," said Sgt. Jack Lowell.

Deputy Chief Terry Gallagher said Calvert and Stock broke up about five months ago.

"We know that she several weeks ago - perhaps as long as five months ago - had tried to end that relationship, and that he had had several contacts with her trying to reestablish that relationship which she had rejected," he said.

Stock, 35, moved away from Calvert's Bellingham home when they broke up after dating for a few months and had recently filed for an anti-harassment order.

Detectives found a receipt that placed Stock at a local Safeway around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, and it appears Calvert followed and waited for her.

They said he had been staying at a hotel just blocks away, most likely watching her for weeks. Calvert had binoculars, duct tape, pepper spray and two guns on him, Gallagher said.

It appears Stock was not the first woman Calvert stalked. According to court documents, Calvert had served time for a 1995 stalking conviction in King County.

The victim in that case said she was afraid of Calvert because of his sudden outbursts and mood swings, but Calvert told her he could not go on living without her. That woman said she changed her phone number and kept it unlisted, but he still managed to get a hold of her by trying every phone number combination possible.

Neighbors said the woman moved back into her parents' home in Port Angeles and was studying to become a teacher.

"Real proud of her girls, real good mom," said neighbor Pat Churchley. "Real pleased with the girls, and thankful that her parents have been there to help out as she was going back to school."

Detectives cordoned off the area and had to wait for a search warrant before going back in the home to begin collecting evidence.

The two young girls are staying with relatives.
