Ken Schram: Too naughty for liberal Seattle?

For all its highly touted liberalism, Seattle has a problem with people swimming 'nekkid.'

For the past several months, anywhere from 30 to 70 people have been showing up at the Ballard pool to go swimming au natural.

Booked as an after-hours nudist event, the once-a-month splash extravaganza is about to fall prey to a bureaucratic hiccup.

Seems the city's parks and recreation department has suddenly "discovered" that to supervise the naturalist's as they cavort in the water, lifeguards have to be at least 21 years of age.

The group has been using lifeguards who are 18 or older.

When asked why they had to be 21, parks department management said it was a "safety thing."

A spokesperson for the 'nekkid' swimmers says the Ballard pool doesn't require 21-year-old lifeguards for any other group.

He sees this as a not so subtle move to get nudists out of the water since 21-year-old lifeguards are few and far between.

And in case you were wondering: There have been no problems, no issues and no complaints.

Just a pack of park department prudes who think swimming 'nekkid' is just too naughty for a liberal city like Seattle.

And be sure to join Ken, along with John Carlson, on "The Commentators", which airs every weekday from 3-6 p.m. on AM 570 KVI.

It's a lively exchange of information, insight and perspective with two guys who don't agree on much, but still manage to enjoy each other as they tackle issues of the day. Even better, callers are invited in on the verbal action.
