LAKEWOOD - Bloodstains spatter the pavement where two people were killed by gunfire and one was injured in a shootout that apparently broke out after a soccer game Saturday night.
Now officers are gathering evidence and looking for a gunman who fled after surviving the violent confrontation.
Officers were called to the chaotic scene at Springbrook Park, at 12700 47th Ave. SW in Lakewood, about 9:30 p.m., said Lakewood police spokeswoman Lt. Heidi Hoffman.
Police said it appeared that two people pulled out guns and fired them during the post-game fracas. Neighbors said up to 15 or 16 gunshots echoed throughout the neighborhood.
When it was all over, one of the shooters and an innocent bystander were severely injured. The shooter later died at Madigan Army Hospital and the bystander, who was caught in the crossfire, died at Tacoma General Hospital.
A second bystander was shot in the leg and walked to the hospital,
The other gunman fled the scene and officers are looking for him.
Detectives are still trying to reconstruct the exact sequence of events before, during and after the deadly shootout.
According to witnesses, a group of people came to Springbrook Park for a game of soccer. After the game, a dispute broke out and neighbors heard shots fired.
Lamar Phleger, who lives in the apartments next to the park, described it like this:
"My wife matter-of-factly said, 'Are those fireworks?' Because the Fourth of July is coming up. I said, 'Oh no, not with the sound of those blasts.'"
Phleger saw one man running with a gun and another chasing him into his Spring Tree apartment complex.
Another neighbor, Scott Bowen, said, "He took his shirt off, was carrying it in his right side. Not sure if he had anything on him and then he disappeared behind the building."
Phleger said the man was trying to stuff the pistol in his pants.
"Once he disappeared I saw the other gentleman come in. He had his pistol out and was like - ay, ay - he was hurt," Phleger said.
Neighbor Ray Erickson said he ran outside when he heard the gunshots and followed a trail of blood.
That's when he saw the saw the second man staggering.
"I seen a Mexican with a bullet hole on his side, a gun down," Erickson said. He said the man was in obvious pain.
Neighbors convinced the injured man to put down his gun, but he collapsed out in the street minutes later.
"He looked like he was going into shock, more or less," Erickson said.
The bystander who died in the crossfire reportedly was a 21-year-old man who had lived in the area for a few years and was at the park for a family picnic.
Police arrested a man Saturday night at the scene who was initially thought to be the surviving shooter. But video from a security camera at the apartment complex showed that he was not involved, and he was released.
It's not known whether the violence was gang-related, but police are investigating that possibility.
One neighbor said the people at the soccer game had been to the park before, and they had always seemed to be "decent" people.
The names and ages of the victims and suspect were not immediately available.
More information will be released as it becomes available.
