One-woman peace tour scoots through Seattle

Alix Bryan

By Denise Whitaker

SEATTLE - The 2008 Peace Scooter tour was in Seattle this weekend. But there weren't hundreds of scooters or people.

There was just one young lady - and just one scooter.

Her name is Alix Bryan, and she wants peace - for herself and for you.

"Well I wanted to put peace on the map," she says.

Alix Bryan rides her "peace scooter" in Seattle.
So she is literally driving around the nation, in the shape of a peace sign.

"Right now I'm finishing the outer circle of the peace sign," she explains.

She started last year, riding 11,000 miles in just 12 weeks.

When she started her Peace Tour, she realized that many people's definition of peace just had to do with the 60s and an anti-war sentiment. She wanted to define her own definition of peace and get others and many of those are displayed on her scooter.

So Alix invites people she meets to tattoo her scooter - whose name by the way, is Audrey. And they have written all kinds of messages:

"Godspeed Alix." ... "Thanks for having us along on your journey." ... "Good Luck - way to go Alix!"

"People are amazingly kind and generous," Alix says. "I'm hoping that once Americans define peace in their life, they'll begin to create more of it. And for me peace is how I take care of myself, my community and my environment."

Alix raises money through raffles and donations on her web site and accepts the kindness of others, who host her in their homes.

She picked a scooter because it gets 90 miles to the gallon and creates less carbon dioxide than other vehicles. And she helps the communities she visits, by volunteering.

"And I think taking a moment to think about peace will create more of it," she says. "I think peace is something you have to cultivate daily in order for it to happen."

Alix will end her Peace Tour back at the White House, at the end of next month - no doubt wiser and fulfilled with the message she helped spread across the country.
