Renton man dies during triathlonBy Associated Press
BEND, Ore. (AP) - A triathlete died Sunday while participating in the swimming portion of an event in Central Oregon.
Patrick Findlay, 45, of Renton, Wash., had been in the water at Wickiup Reservoir for about 1,200 meters when he realized something was wrong and swam to an event volunteer for help, said Jon Atherton, a director of the Pacific Crest Triathlon. Findlay soon lost consciousness. A jet ski rushed him to a boat ramp, where efforts to save his life failed, said Sgt. Ronny Dozier of the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office. The heat wave gripping Oregon was not suspected in the death. The swimming portion of the triathlon takes place before the biking and running and Findlay entered the water just after 9 a.m. - when the weather was relatively comfortable. Dozier said he didn't know if an autopsy had been scheduled. Heat was suspected in the death of a 34-year-old runner who died Saturday while participating in a 10K charity event in Sandy. Organizers of the third-annual Noah's Run, which raises money for maternal-fetal medical research at Legacy Emanuel Hospital, went looking for Slieght Manivong when the Portland man didn't return. After calling police, a search and rescue member of the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office found Manivong just after 4 p.m. His body was a half-mile off the race path. Police said there is no evidence of foul play; they speculate that the 100-degree heat led to Manivong's death. "The heat can do some terrible things to people," said Sgt. David Lundervold of the Sandy Police Department. |
