RENTON, Wash. -- Daren Dougan was hit while riding his motorcycle and left for dead. Driver after driver failed to stop and help.

With Dougan now in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center, his family is hoping someone will come forward with information about the crash. The family wants to know what happened and who's to blame.

Dougan's family members say their loved one's outlook is bleak. He has several broken bones, including bones in his neck and back.

Police say Dougan was riding his motorcycle when a light-colored SUV, possibly a Mercedes or a Kia, slammed into him at 45th Place and Talbot Road last Thursday around 11 o'clock. The driver took off.

Dougan is now a coma and may not survive.

"He was just that uncle that they (my kids) jumped on and climbed on and woke up Christmas morning because Santa was there, and now they don't have him," said sister Dana Townsend.

Several days have already passed since the accident, and family members want to know why police didn't ask the public for help sooner.

"Was there anybody talking about it? Did the car go to a body shop? Did it get any work done? Did a neighbor see the car?" Townsend said.

When asked whether the driver could have covered up his vehicle by now, Sgt. Clark Wilcox with Renton police said, "Well, sure he could have. But when this goes out and we ask for the people's help, someone is going to help us out."

Wilcox said police could not issue an alert sooner because they were still investigating the case.

Investigators now know there are several witnesses. Wilcox said seven cars drove by Dougan before someone finally stopped to help. Both police and Dougan's family hope those witnesses come forward with information that may help police.

"Search your heart and think about your own. Think of your own son or daughter, or brother or sister laying in a bed in a coma," said the victim's father, Jim Dougan.

Anyone with information on the hit-and-run case is urged to contact the Renton Police Department.
