Ken Schram: Bennett isn't the villain in Sonics loss

By Ken Schram

We keep the name, Oklahoma gets the game.

I think Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels did the best he could with a bad situation.

It would have been pointless to keep the team here for two more years with the idea that local buyers would pull out a miracle and get Clay Bennett to sell the team back.

And while Clay Bennett may be an ass, he's not the real villain in all this.

All he did was bring professional basketball to the sports-starved citizens of Oklahoma City.

For my money, the part of villain is played by none other than a menacing mogul whose main mission is to caffeinate the world.

Howard Schultz bought the Sonics; ran the team into the ground and then sold it to an out-of-towner.

Who the hell does he think he's fooling by pretending that it never dawned on him that the new owner wanted to pack up and move?

As for getting another pro basketball team here in the near future: Don't hold your breath.

We may keep the Sonics name, but the game is likely gone forever.
