BURIEN - An emergency shelter that housed dozens of people displaced by a deadly apartment fire last weekend closed its doors Saturday evening. But some of the people who took refuge there still don't have a permanent place to live.
"Now we're about to step into a new challenge," said one of them, Taualai Tuiletufuga, as he loaded boxes and bags into his van. It's the second move for his family in six days. The Tuiletufugas lost their home of five years last weekend as flames ripped through their apartment overnight and they rushed to wake up neighbors. The arson fire killed three people and displaced dozens of others - many of whom find themselves in the same boat as the Tuiletufugas, looking for another permanent place of residence. Despite the challenges, Taualai Tuiletufuga said the family's mood is more upbeat now than it was in the immediate aftermath of the fire. "We were standing at the sight for almost 12 hours - just gazing at the fire and ruin," he said. "We were just hugging one another and crying." The Red Cross, which had opened the shelter for victims at the Lake Burien Presbyterian Church, said everyone in the shelter has found at least some kind of temporary housing. "Everyone has a transition plan in place. They know where they're going, they have resources lined up - so we thought it was a good time to close the shelter," said the Red Cross' Katherine Bowry. John Miklosh and his fiancee, Sharon Howell, haven't found a new apartment yet. They'll spend the next three days in a motel. "We've got three or four leads," Milosh says. "We're hoping. I've got the money. I just need a place." Bison Creek Pizza in Burien is hosting a fund-raiser for these victims between 5 and 9 p.m. Sunday. Meanwhile, the investigation continues into the fire, and a $10,000 reward has been offerd for information that leads to an arrest. |
