A young woman said a "gang member" she didn't know left the boy at her home on Tacoma's east end, according to investigators.

TACOMA, Wash. -- Detectives are investigating the history of a mysterious baby boy who appears to have been tortured.

Detective Ed Troyer said a young woman named Printess Williams dropped off the boy at the hospital.

The woman told investigators a "gang member" whom she didn't know had dropped off the boy outside her mobile home in the 1000 block of 73rd Street Court East and after threatening to kill the baby, abandoned him.

Williams said the boy appeared to be in bad shape.

"He had lumps on his head, you know, bruises on his chest, the bottom of his foot was burned," she said. "He was all shaky. He wouldn't let anyone touch him because every time you'd pick him up, every time you'd touch him, 'owie, owie, owie.'"

But instead of calling 911 right away, Williams said she kept the boy for two days before finally taking him to a hospital. When asked why she hadn't immediately sought medical care for the boy, Williams did not have a clear answer at first.

"Well, you know...actually, I really don't know," she said.

Williams later said she thought maybe the man who had dropped him off would come back for the baby, even though she said she had never seen him or the baby prior to the incident.

When asked whether the man was a gang member, Williams said, "Well, I have no comment about that." She said the mystery man did tell her the boy's name was Javay, and asked her to take care of him.

When Williams finally did take him to the hospital, deputies were called.

Troyer said the boy appeared to have suffered significant torture and was in serious condition. Investigators are withholding the name of the hospital where the boy is being treated for security reasons.

The boy, said to be approximately 22 months old, was left with a diaper bag with decent clothes, leading police to believe someone had taken care of him in the past.

Troyer said there have been a number of conflicting stories over who might be the child's actual caretaker, and deputies are still investigating the case.

Any information on the infant's identity, parent, care taker or who inflicted the injuries to him are asked to call Pierce County Crime Stoppers 253-591-5959.
