Prosecutors: Soccer mom stole from youth club

PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. -- A soccer mom has been charged with embezzling the future of a local youth soccer league.

Pierce County prosecutors say Deborah Angilley, the former treasurer of the Fife-Milton-Edgewood Junior Soccer Club, bilked $72,000 from the 14-and-under girls' league between October 2006 and February 2007.

They claim she wrote numerous checks to herself, to her landlord, to her 16-year-old son and to credit card companies. But perhaps worst of all, prosecutors said she made several ATM withdrawals at Emerald Queen Casino where she maintained a Preferred Players account.

The $72,000 were earmarked to be spent on equipment, as well as on the lease of several local fields. The money as well as all financial records are gone.

The parents whose daughters belong to the league were shocked to hear the league's former treasurer is accused of stealing all their money. When they found out that Angilley used to be a coach herself, they were left fuming.

"The fact that somebody would break that trust -- that's an unfortunate situation," said John Bates.

"I was kind of shocked," said a player named Billie. "What will happen? Will it be shut down? Will we not be able to play?"

The parents were also left wondering whether the league will ever recover. According to court documents, the league's president says $40,000 in loans is the only thing that's keeping the club afloat this season. He says the incident has tarnished the league's reputation and creditors now won't go near them, leaving the burden up to the parents.

"I don't mind putting more money in to take care of this situation. I want my daughters to play regardless," said Bates.

Angilley moved away from the neighborhood and now lives in Wenatchee. She is due in court in September to face 13 counts of theft.
