SEATTLE - One man was killed and two others were injured when a minivan collided with a pedicab Wednesday evening only a few blocks from Seattle Center in Belltown.

Witnesses said the pedicab driver was transporting a couple through the area just before 7 p.m. when a minivan collided with the three-wheeled touring bike near Western Avenue and Cedar Street.

A 60-year-old man who was riding in the pedicab died at the scene, said Seattle fire officials.

The other passenger, a woman in her 60s, and the driver of the pedicab, a 23-year-old man, were both transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with non-life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses said the pedicab, with the name Cascadia Cabs, was heading west on Cedar towards Western with its two passengers when it ran a red light. The driver was screaming, as if he had lost control of the vehicle.

Seattle police later confirmed that there was an equipment failure on the pedicab that contributed to the accident.

A white minivan entered the intersection at the same moment, witnesses said, and apparently could not avoid the pedicab as it headed north. The minivan ran over all three people on the pedicab.

A spokesman for Cascadia Cab said the driver was a new employee who had just moved to Seattle from Texas two weeks ago. He is one of 17 pedicab drivers employed by the company.

The names of the victims were not immediately available.
