What say you about bridge tolling?
By Eric Schudiske
SEATTLE -- The clank of coins might soon accompany the buzz of bridge traffic on State Route 520 and Interstate 90 if the Seattle City Council has its way.
The council wants the tolling to begin by 2010, but the council's opinion is just one of hundreds. On Wednesday dozens gathered for the sixth and final public meeting on the issue. The Department of Transportation says the 520 bridge, aging and potentially unsafe, needs to be replaced. Seattle lawmakers want drivers of both the I-90 bridge and the 520 bridge to cover the costs of the 520 project. "(We) strongly encourage the committee to develop and evaluate a scenario that places tolls on both SR-520 and I-90 on 2010," the council wrote. The council wants to charge $2.30 per way. The DOT would most likely adjust the toll depending on the traffic flow and the time of day; however, the toll may stay in place in place for a decade, which could drive commuters away. "I'm like every taxpayer. Everything sounds like too much to me. That sounds expensive," said Troy Wallin. "They've got to think. Usually you don't want to pay for something that's not already there. Let us pay for it after it's built," said Tony Lucero. Naysayers are inevitable on an issue like this one, according to one local group. "You won't find anyone who will say 'Gee, golly, I want to pay tolls," said Bob Drewel with the 520 Tolling Implementation Committee. The committee has collected nearly 700 opinions from drivers and cities located around Lake Washington, and wants to continue hearing from anyone and everyone who has something to say on the issue. "We want as many cooks as we can get in this kitchen," said Drewel. The committee will take public comment on the city's proposal on its Web site until August 31, then present the findings to the state in January. |
