PASCO, Wash. -- A baby boy cut from his mother's womb before she was stabbed to death is home from the hospital with his family.
Salvador Campos was teetering on the edge of survival at a Spokane hospital for six weeks. Now his father and siblings are getting to know him.
Doctors say he suffered brain damage when he was deprived of oxygen, and he may never be able to walk. They can only wait to see the other effects of his premature birth.
The boy's father, Juan Felipe Campos Gomez, said he is grateful to live in such a supportive community. Since his wife's murder, friends and strangers have held fundraisers for the family.
Salvador's 27-year-old mother, Araceli Camacho Gomez, was found dead in Columbia Park in Kennewick on June 28.
Phiengchai Sisouvanh Synhavong, 23, of Kennewick is accused of killing the mother, taking the baby from her womb and trying to pass him off as her own.
Synhavong pleaded not guilty to aggravated first-degree murder. Her trial is scheduled for March 30.
Under state law, the only two possible punishments for Sisouvanh Synhavong, if convicted, are death or life in prison without parole.
