Missing Wash. man found dead in mysterious motorcycle wreckBy KATU Web StaffCLARK COUNTY, Wash. - A Clark County man who went missing over the weekend while on a motorcycle ride was found dead early Monday after he apparently crashed his bike into an area not visible from the road, authorities said. The man was identified as 41-year-old Robert O. Hayes of Yacolt, Wash. According to the Clark County Sheriff's Office, Hayes left his home about 5 a.m. Sunday to meet a friend for breakfast in the Woodland-area but never showed up. His family became concerned when they still had not heard from him by Sunday evening, and they started their own search. Relatives were able to get the man's cell phone carrier to pinpoint the location of Hayes' cell phone to within about 800 meters. Continued searching led them to some bushes on a curve on Reid Road just east of 156th Avenue that appeared to have been slightly disturbed, the sheriff's office said. They found Hayes about 4 a.m. trapped beneath his motorcycle less than 30 feet from the bushes; he was already dead. The crash occurred about 6.5 miles from Hayes' home on Yacolt Mountain Road, the sheriff's office said. Investigators believe Hayes may have had a medical emergency prior to the crash, but they had not confirmed that as of Monday afternoon. Deputies found no sign of braking or skid marks at the scene, and the motorcycle did not appear to have anything mechanically wrong with it, the sheriff's office said. Investigators also have no reason to believe any other vehicles were involved in the wreck. |
