Update from KOMO News Director Holly Gauntt and anchor Dan Lewis:
Kathi is out of surgery.
She went in at about 8 a.m. and came out at about 4 p.m. She is in recovery now.
The doctors say the surgery went well. As they've done in the past, they took as much of the tumor as they could but were unable to get all of it. To take it all would be too risky to damage some important nerves.
Kathi will likely be in the hospital for several days before returning home to recover. She will begin radiation treatment as soon as she is strong enough.
Kathi is a fighter and will do everything she possibly can to beat this once and for all. Her grace and strength will get her through but prayers from us all will help.
It was her fourth surgery in 10 years to deal with the tumor.
Sept. 18, 2008 Update:
A message from Kathi Goertzen:
I am so sorry to have to tell you this again. I have had a recurrence of my brain tumor.
The experimental drug I used following my recent surgery was not successful and the tumor has grown back.
On Wednesday, September 24th, I will once again have surgery to remove as much as possible. The surgery will be followed by radiation treatment.
Though this is discouraging news for me and my family, I have faith that I'll be OK and am confident in the team of doctors I have working for me.
I am also extremely thankful for the continued love and support and prayers I receive from you. It all means more than you'll ever know.
I am confident in a smooth and fast recovery and plan to see you back here very soon.
