SEATTLE - While talk of economic layoffs is growing, there is one governmental agency that is hiring - the U.S. Border Patrol.

Agents were at the Seattle Sheraton on Saturday, soliciting new recruits to join the Border Patrol and work the southern border with Mexico.

President Bush promised an increase to 16,000 Border Patrol agents by the time he left office. The agency is still 4,000 short - and Bush has only 100 days left in office.

"Everyone starts off at the southern border," said Damian White, who was there to supervise the recruiting.

"Most people apply, and they'll start on the southern border. That's where they get their valuable experience," he said. "Within two years the applicant or person is eligible to transfer north."

Starting pay is $38,000 a year - more for those who know Spanish.

But if you last three years, the pay jumps to $72,000 a year.
