SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - The suspect in a slaying near Malo in northeast Washington has been identified as a 35-year-old man from Renton.

Bail was set at $750,000 Friday for Corey James Monaghan, who is being held for investigation of first-degree murder and first-degree arson. The Ferry County Superior Court hearing was conducted by phone, because Monaghan is under guard in a Spokane hospital with undisclosed injuries.

The Ferry County sheriff's office says the incident began about 10 a.m. Wednesday when a man was shot to death inside a house in Malo, about 100 miles northwest of Spokane.

Sheriff's officials say they believe Monaghan then set the home on fire and fled, but he was captured a short time later.

Authorities say the victim is from the Seattle area, but he has not been identified.
