KIRKLAND, Wash. -- If cats really do have 9 lives, a local kitten is down to 8.

A 7-week-old stray hitched a ride from Kent to Kirkland -- under the hood of a car!

Kent's Jairo Batres made the discovery on a day he was running late for work -- really late.

"I was speeding because I was late," Batres said. "I was going like 80."

A few hours after he got to work at the Kirkland PCC, he got paged. Something was wrong with his car, or so he thought.

"(There were a) whole bunch of people around my car -- obviously something was going on," he said.

Bonnie Vevea of the Meow Cat Rescue shelter was the first one there. Their office just happens to be across the street from the PCC.

"I heard a very distressed cry," she said.

She heard a cat in trouble, but couldn't figure out where all the meowing was coming from.

"Every now and then, when we would walk away, we would hear a cry again," she said.

Vevea says they finally traced the cry's origin, and to their disbelief found 7-week-old Kendall, who had apparently hitched a ride under the hood of Batres' car and made the entire 22 mile journey from Kent to Kirkland.

"She was extremely hungry and dehydrated," Vevea said. "And she is just a lucky kitty."

Batres added: "Talk about nine lives; it's pretty cool."

Kendall will be up for adoption in about a month. But in the meantime, there are more than 90 other cats who need homes at the Meow Cat Rescue shelter.

The folks at Meow Cat Rescue hope Kendall's good luck surviving her wild ride will bring more good luck to the other kitties here who are also in need of a home. Go to www.meowcatrescue.org for more information.
