FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- Two people were killed in a crossover crash in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 on Thursday night, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Troopers said a driver headed north crossed over the center line and caused a five-car crash at south 296th Street around 6 p.m.

The details surrounding the crash has not been released. One car was seen flipped upside down, and others were seen severely damaged.

Two people were pronounced dead at the scene. Two others, including the driver at fault was rushed to the hospital in serious condition.

Ron Gascoyne, who was driving south on I-5 at the time, said the wrong-way driver came very close to hitting him, but hit the car behind him instead.

Gascoyne, a married father of four, said he can't believe he was not hit since he saw the car coming right at him.

"I swerved a little bit to the right, just missed me and hit the car (behind me) head on," he said. "I looked in my rearview mirror and the explosion -- it was unbelievable."

The cause of the crash has not been determined. However, investigators believe the driver, a 51-year-old Puyallup man, may have been impaired. He has been placed under arrest for investigation of vehicular homicide.

The crash shut down all southbound lanes of I-5 between mileposts 145 and 146. Traffic was seen backed up for hours. Two lanes reopened at 9:45 p.m., and the remaining three lanes opened at 10:45 p.m.
